Imagine a life without electricity. Think of all the times you use an electrical device or even do something as simple as turn on the lights.
Now, imagine what you would be able to accomplish in your life without any of those things. Not much, I’m afraid.
But that is life for thousands of rural villagers in the area we serve. They have no electricity. Their homes are lit by small candles or the light of the fire used to cook meals. Even in the middle of the day, their huts are dark on the inside.
They live their lives by the Sun – getting up at dawn, going to bed shortly after dusk. They can’t use a radio. They can’t charge a cell phone. All of this combines to isolate them from the outside world – and opportunities for a better life.
That changed this year in the village of Se Pemech (Say – Pay – Maych). There, thanks to your donations and a grant from the Diocese of Austin Ashes to Easter fund, we provided solar power kits to all the homes in the village.
Each kit came with a solar panel, battery and inverter that powers four light sockets and allows for charging of small devices, such as cell phones.
Now, the families of Se Pemech can light their homes and use cell phones. This may sound trivial to some, but it is a big jump forward for the villagers.
Light allows them to do many tasks and work in their homes that they previously couldn’t do. Cell phones connect them to the outside world, allow them to communicate and network with neighbors, and call for help.
A little solar kit makes a big difference in their lives.
Thanks to all who donated to make their dreams a reality.
